New Automation Software Platform For SafanDarley Press Brakes: ASC-Control

New software platform:
ASC-Control

SafanDarley proudly presents the fully in-house developed software platform ASC-Control (Automated Solution Cell). This provides SafanDarley with a perfect software platform that enables all further developments with and around the electric E-Brakes and the hydraulic H-Brakes. Together with AutoPOL and RoboBend (offline software), ASC-control enables SafanDarley to offer a total package for all automated solutions. As a result, customers are no longer dependent on third parties and have only one point of contact for the entire package.

High priority on ease of use

In developing the new software platform, high priority was given to ease of use. An extensive training programme is therefore not necessary for the operator. After sending a job to the ASC-Control, he can easily operate the machine and execute the job. This allows the operator to work efficiently and increases the productivity of the automated cell.

How this works was shown at the E-volution days 2023 using an E-Brake 35T Premium Mini Cell with palletiser and AGV. This is a cell for fully automated production of small complex products. It also allows successive bending of different products without intermediate programming. The cell is modularly built and can therefore be configured entirely according to the customer’s wishes, thus achieving optimum efficiency and higher productivity.

Basis for further development

“Now that ASC-Control is available, it provides a huge step forward in terms of ease of use, efficiency and productivity. And it lays a nice foundation for SafanDarley to develop on,” says Gert Dekker (CE0).
In fact, only phase 1 of ASC-Control has been completed, the main outcome being that a customer can now run its robotic press brake cell independently. “In the next phases, we will go one step further each time,” Dekker explains. “We are thinking about working with multiple robots in the cell, other brands of robots and various solutions for the supply and removal of materials and products”.

Frequently changing parts and small batch sizes require a universal bending technology. The most common bending technology are press brake bending and folding. Below we will look at the differences.

Folding: Bending Sequence

During the folding sequence the blank rests on the sheet support table. A gauging system positions the part to the bend line. The upper and lower beam clamp the blank. During the bending cycle the folding beam moves up around a pivot point. On up-down acting machines, the folding beam moves upwards or downwards, depending on the bending direction.

The gauging system positions the part to the bend line (operator training finished in no-time)
Upright posture, easy operation (no health problems)
Usually one operator is sufficient even for large, cumbersome and heavy parts (low labor/parts costs)

Press Brake: Bending Sequence

During the bending sequence the blank is positioned outside the machine. The operator holds and supports the weight of the blank. For bending the upper ram moves down into the lower die. Both sides of the part move up and leave the plane. A linear ram movement results in the bend angle. Sequence requires experienced operators.

Operator needs to lift/support/hold the part (quality problems due to fatigue)
Experienced, well trained operator required (problem finding skilled operators)
Health (shoulder problems) and safety are critical
Large/cumbersome or heavy parts require multiple operators (high costs per part)
Slow cycle times (high costs per part)

Folding: Machine Setup

Folding machines can bend all angles with a single set of tools. The machine automatically adjusts to the material thickness. Higher automated folding machines come with an automatic tool changer.

Universal tools (reduced setup effort)
Usually one set of tools sufficient for all customer parts
Low investment and operating costs
Low set-up times allow for small batch sizes (need-based production)

Press Brake: Machine Setup

Press brake bending typically requires a large number of punches and different applications.

Different “V” dies for different sheet thicknesses
Small “V” dies required for short flanges
Usually a large variety of upper ram geometries are used
Investment in additional tools over time
Often long set-up times

Folding: Material thickness tolerances

During the folding sequence the folding beam tool contacts the outside of the material and moves exactly to the programmed angle.

The reference side is only the outside of the material
Exact movement to the programmed angle (high angle accuracy)
Sheet thickness tolerances do not affect the bend angle
No angle measuring system required

Press brake: Material thickness tolerances

On press brakes, the punch contacts the material from above and the “V” die from below.

Sheet thickness tolerances lead to angle variances
Expensive, inflexible angle measuring system required for compensation

Folding: Gauging

On a folding machine the entire part is inside the machine. Only a short flange stands out of the upper and lower beam tool.

Press brakes normally gauge the short flange. The long flange protrudes from the machine.

These are usually the critical part dimensions for a perfect fit in the assembly

Folding: Sensitive material surfaces

Folding reduces the sliding area of tools on the material surfaces to a minimum, or completely eliminates it on some machines (Multibend-Center, ProfileCenter).

Ideal for stainless steel or coated sheets

Press brakes draw the material over the edges into the “V” die. The long sliding distance is shown results in scratches on the outside of the sheets.

Folding: Tool wear

As there are only very slight relative movements between the tool and the material surface, the tooling shows no abrasion wear even after years of use.

Folding: Bending radii

On folding machines, a radius can be easily created of short bending segments. By using small steps the outside of the radius will be very smooth and the individual steps will not be visible.

Creating a radius with bending steps on a press brake is quite difficult, as the sheet moves upwards at each step.

Applications: Increased stiffness, protective edges, part connections

Edge rounding and its effects on coating systems

The total chain is only as strong as its weakest link. This statement obviously applies to everything. All coating systems can be tested among the most extreme conditions, but why do some systems not meet these conditions. For various applications, a particular coating system is recommended. For example, a coating system which is placed in an outdoor installation, on the coast, will be subject to different demands than a coating system which is used in a dry environment.

One-, two- or multi-layer systems are therefore always applicable. The obtained layer thickness and the applied coating are therefore always the protective factors of the underlying metal. With powder coating, it is no problem at all to inject 80 microns. For example, one operation on a flat surface. On these surfaces than normally occurs no corrosion. The biggest problems always arise from the sharp edges and corners. When these sharp edges and corners are not rounded enough or deburred, this will always be the weakest link of the entire coating system.

An sharp edge or corner is subject to insufficient film thickness, and thus this is insufficient protection. This is particularly important for applications such as architectural perforated panels, these panels will have to meet certain conditions. All edges and corners should be rounded with a radius of at least 0.5 mm. The perforation holes should be as large as possible, most preferably not smaller than 10 mm. When the starting material meets these requirements, it will always have a two-layer coating system in order to achieve sufficient edge coverage and therefore protection.

At Austech 2019 Sheetmetal Machinery Australia will showcase the latest SafanDarley E-Brake Ultra 130T-4100 with E-Bend L Blue laser angle measurement system. Proven around the world, the range of SafanDarley electric press brakes offer industries the most advanced features and production benefits. Their unique maintenance free roller drive system is available on press brakes from 35 to 300 tons and working lengths up to 4 meters. Simply put, the SafanDarley E-Brake is faster, more accurate, cheaper to run, cheaper to maintain and more flexible than similar systems. For higher tonnage applications greater than 300 tons, SafanDarley also offer the H-Brake and H-Brake Hybrid.

The new generation of E-Brake adds important new advantages to the E-Brake technology, which has already proven itself all over the world. The machines in the 50T–130T range are built according to a modular concept that is a new step forward in the efficiency of machine construction. The new design is in line with the design of the larger E-Brakes. The CNC crowning and the dual screen EC20 control are important characteristics. In addition, more options have been added, and the machine can be expanded with a 3D back gauge and E-Bend L Blue laser angle measurement system.
