XLT bend … excellent!

For those who form complex precision sheet metal parts like cassettes, panels, and boxes and are wanting to increase productivity, the XLT bend is a perfect fit. The XLT bend, with 4060 x 2.5 mm or 3200 x 3 mm mild steel capacity, is an impressively flexible UpDown folding machine. Along with innovative mechanical components, the CNC’s One-Click Programming is certain to be a production highlight. Especially significant on the latest machine from RAS is its modularity, which over time will be added to the complete line of future RAS models.

UpDown Technology

The machine can be built for operation from the front or rear. With a new redundant safety system, operation is possible from the front even with UpDown bending. Bent parts no longer need to be flipped, as the folding beam is capable of automatically avoiding prebent flanges.

One-Click-Programming

Where experience and expertise were formerly required for programming, this intelligence is embedded in the machine software. Either the operator on the floor or engineer in the office directly imports STEP, DXF, or GEO files … and that is it! A simple mouse click is all that is required to program the complete setup and bend sequence automatically.

When several strategies are available to form the imported part, the CNC control shows alternative sequences and ranks each with a 5-star rating to simplify the best strategy for production. The operator has the option to simulate each strategy in 3D from any perspective and zoom. Once the operator evaluates and selects a strategy, all that remains is to press the “Start” button to begin the precision forming.

PC Control

To complement the newest folding concept, the RAS XLTbend includes two 24” monitors for operation. These are mounted on the machine sides, with the ability to tilt and adjust for the most ergonomic use by any operator. RAS makes it possible for the optional operation of the UpDown machine in both the front and rear of the machine. In order to validate machine operation, the operator must confirm either front or rear use of the machine before the applicable safety protocols are activated automatically. An integrated light band indicates the operation status of the machine.

Folding Beam

The folding beam is a revolutionary new design which is proven to reduce deflection by 20x over the bend line. The “Beam-In-Beam” principle achieves incredibly straight bends in real-time, without the need for adjustment. An additional crowning axis is completely unnecessary, and the folding beam can be utilized as a front stop in the 90° position with its perfectly flat surface.
Even the folding beam pendulum, critical for changing the folding beam direction, is driven with two servo-electric motors. This eliminates the mechanical changeover of pendulum blocks when using different folding beam tool widths, shortening the tool setup process and achieving additional productivity.

Hybrid gauging system

With modular gauging concepts, the customer can choose a rectangular table with gauging out to 1550 mm or can elect to add extended squaring tables for 4050 mm of squaring capacity. Each squaring finger zone is pneumatically actuated though the CNC control. If necessary, individual fingers can be mechanically restricted by hand so that warped or uneven edges (i.e. coil material) can be positioned accurately.

The latest innovation from RAS is a brand new hybrid gauging system. Stop fingers position of the blank to the bend line. The blank is held in place against the fingers by a vacuum system, so that subsequent bends can be positioned without the help or handling of an operator. As soon as the blank needs to be rotated, the pop-up fingers descend automatically below the table pans, in order to ease the operator’s manipulation of the workpiece.

Tooling System

RAS has enlarged free space in front and in the rear of the XLTbend’s upper beam tools. The 155 mm tall tools continue to have the strength for the max capacity of the machine. Additionally, it is now possible to have tooling up to 300 mm tall, permitting even deeper box depths for additional product capability. The upper and folding beam tool segments are simply placed into the tool rail and are automatically clamped in place. Between the lower beam tools, it is possible for the backgauge fingers to move as close as 10 mm from the bend line.

RAS ProfileCenter

The Profile Center is a bending center for metal components up to 3200 mm in length and 700 mm in width. The capacity of the machine is designed for 2 mm mild steel or 1.5 mm stainless steel materials. The Profile Center uses the folding technology for flexible folding of profiles such as door frames, elevator parts or cable ducts. Precision bending in batch size 1 is no longer a dream, but reality with the Profile Center!

FlexGripper Positioning system

The unique FlexGripper Positioning System moves, rotates and flips the blank automatically during the folding process. Its multi-flexible suction frame grips the part with up to forty suction cups. The vacuum is generated by an on-board vacuum pump. The suction bar can grab the blank from below, from above or from behind and can automatically change its access position during the folding sequence.

Slim tools

The folding technology is based on the moving folding beam. Its high and slim folding beam tool is exactly designed for the profile bending requests. The tools of the upper and lower clamping beam come with delicate geometries and with huge free space areas. By finite element optimization they are designed for 2 mm mild steel applications

One click programming

All this flexibility will be managed on the programming side. Making the complexity of the bending process manageable, RAS uses the unique and innovative one-click programming software. The operator just pulls a STEP file of the profile by drag-and-drop into the RAS software. With a single mouse click the part is programmed. If the software finds alternative folding strategies, it automatically evaluates the options and proposes the best bending strategy using a five-star ranking system. If the programmer wishes to examine the bending sequence prior to production, he may do so using the 3D simulation.

The RAS Profile Center bridges the gap between highly productive but inflexible rollforming lines and manually operated press brakes, which require a high operator expertise and great skill in the handling of the sheets.

You will be fascinated about the easy to use Touch&More control. With the revolutionary RAS programming method the operator uses his finger as a pencil. He simply paints a flange and sizes it with his finger to the right dimension and angle. The Touch&More screen shows the finished part, simulates the folding sequence and shows whether the part can be folded or not. The CADalyzer automatically creates the program for most parts and shows the program, the finished part and the actual bend sequence all at one time.

Upper Beam

A super-fast drive system opens and closes the beam at 26 mm (1.0″) per second, up to a height of 200 mm (7.87″). As the open and close position is programmable, you can create any variety of hems, thus making your parts unique and versatile. The special upper clamping beam shape offers extra large areas in front of the beam. Large free areas behind the beam allow your operators to see the tools when creating large parts from the rear. Lower Beam

Tooling System

The three segment sharp tool can be taken on and off by a single operator in no time. The exclusive RAS goat’s foot tooling is precision designed, and literally “quick-clamps” and locks in position so that it is ready to work within seconds. No other tool system offers so much free space around the tool for all different part geometries. C-flanges can be as long as 56 mm (2.2″). Handy tool segments of maximum 200 mm (7.874″) length make it extremely simple to change tools. Four sided boxes can be as deep as 110 mm (4.3″) and the tools are designed for the creation of all possible part shapes with a single universal set of tools.

Backgauge and Sheet Support System

Another real plus is the unlimited backgauge versatility. Each backstop units comes with three position pop-up fingers. They are driven by a brushless AC servo motor with twin parallel guidance and position the workpiece to any dimension in under 2 seconds. The backstop system can come as “J” or “U” shape with lengths up to 3050 mm (120″). Think about it. Your operator can run small parts from the front of the machine. An intelligent crowning system and 120 tons of clamping pressure ensure perfect folded parts on 6 mm mild steel or 4 mm stainless.

Straight bends are essential for perfectly folded parts. A sturdy and solid machine design is the biggest contributor in producing straight bends. The heavily built folding beam powerfully resists bending forces using a deep and rigid box design. Bending forces vary significantly depending on material thickness, material quality and part length. In addition, the machine deflection near the side frames is less than in the center of the machine.

RAS Reinhardt Maschinenbau GmbH now offers the patented intelligent crowning system on its line of FLEXIbend folding machines. Integrated sensors measure the actual beam deflection during the first couple of degrees of the folding beam movement. Using this information, the CNC control activates the crowning system, which automatically compensates for beam deflection during the folding beam movement. The CNC writes the adjustment value for each bend into the program so there is no need for additional measuring cycles for the remaining parts.

Without test bends or additional programming, the crowning system creates perfectly straight parts. So, if the material is thick or thin, mild steel or stainless, short or long flanges, or whether the part will be folded in the center of the machine or to one side, the results are straight and accurate parts.

Backgauge and Sheet Support

The backstop fingers automatically position the part to the bend line. The stop finger can reach any position within the standard backstop dimension from 10 to 1550mm (.39 to 61″) in less than 2 seconds. For blanks larger than 61″ a J-shape or U-shape backgauge can be added with a gauging depth of up to 4050mm (159.5″).

Amazing clamping pressure

With 130 US tons of clamping pressure a single operator can bend perfect angles on 6 mm (1/4″) mild steel with record speed, and with absolute accuracy. No longer a dream in a fabricator’s mind, GIGAbend is the only name for speed, power, accuracy, and total crowning automation. The UpDownCenter-2 is a semi-automatic bending center for high precision panels and boxes up to 4060 mm bending length and up to 600 mm box height. With up to 4 mm mild steel bending capacity, it is ideal for thin and medium material thicknesses. The machine can be operated from the gauging system side. Bent parts with long and high flanges can be also unloaded from the folding beam side. The tool changer cuts set-up times and increases productivity, especially for small production lots or when a tool change is required within the bending sequence. In addition to up and down folding and the automated PosLift part positioning system, the automatic creation of bending programs is another highlight of the machine.

PosLift gauging system

After the blank is squared, suction cups of the PosLift gauging system take over the part. Up to 132 suction cups position the workpiece for each bend. The UpDownCenter 2 forms the sheet up and down, so the machine finishes one side of the part before the operator turns the blank to the next side.

Fast tool change

The tool changer is not only fast, but also extremely flexible. The two gripper arms take the tool segments from the tool magazine and places them within one-hundredth of a millimeter accuracy in the automatic upper beam tool seat.

NEW: Robot stacks folded parts behind each other

New feature for the intelligent unload robot: The intelligent unloading robot of the RAS Multibend center can now create two stacks of finished parts behind each other. This utilizes the space on the pallet much more efficient. Programming or teaching of the robot is not necessary. You simply selects the stacking order. Parts can be stacked for example: one part on top of another, one part on top of another rotated with an angle, parts  stacked vertically, two stacks beside each other … and now … two stacks behind each other!

Robotic blank loading with camera system

A camera installed above a brush table captures the blank. The computer searches its database to identify the detected blank. Once a match has been found with a stored program, the control loads the program.
But that’s not all! The camera also determines the position of the blank on the brush table. This position data will be transferred to the loading robot. The robot uses the coordinates and calculates how the part can be picked and loaded to the Multibend-Center.
